Final Assessment

We just adore today’s wonderful wine. This 2009 Benevolo Sonoma Valley Sangiovese is a delicious wine that shows just how good a California Sangio can be.

Bright, approachable and very easy to drink, this delightful wine shows classic Sangiovese character - while showing off the exciting terroir of the Dry Creek Valley. This is a dark and soulful Sangiovese that just begs to be enjoyed with a great meal. It also has the sort of fruit and structure that makes it a wonderful solo-sipper.

Well balanced and bright, we recommend this wine with nearly any Italian meal. We’ll be enjoying ours with ricotta stuffed pasta shells with a rich marinara sauce, served alongside a caprese salad.

Tasting Profile

Look

Pale garnet hues with perfect clarity through the darker core of the wine. Pretty pink at the edges. When swirled, skinny, wine-stained tears race down the glass.

Smell

The wine leads with wonder, heady fruit, including stewed strawberry, red cherry, red plum, red fruit preserves. Underneath, milder aromas of red licorice, earthy crimini mushroom, leather pipe tobacco pouch, mineral salt air.

Taste

Dense red cherry, underripe blackberry, cherry pie, gradually yield to earthy dried blueberry, vanilla, and tomato stem.

Finish

Fruits from the palate carry long through the finish, tailing off very gradually. The smooth texture of the wine supports the fruit, transitioning them into more earthen flavors.

What the Winery Says

For our 2009 Sonoma Valley Sangiovese, we were fortunate to procure some amazing fruit from some exclusive vineyards in southern Sonoma County, among the rolling hills of Sonoma Valley, reminiscent of those in Tuscany. This wine is a tribute to our Italian culture, with a nod to the rich fruit provided by our Northern California geography and climate.

Enjoy the aromas of dark ripe fruit with black pepper and smoky, gamy notes. Savor the seductive, concentrated, extracted fruit – black cherries, blackberries and raspberries, balanced by a pronounced earthiness and perfumed floral essence with herbs and hints of vanilla and spice, followed by intense, mouth-filling, dark fruit and black currants with a long, lingering plum and berry finish.

Made in the ‘Super Tuscan’ style, we blended in some exclusive Sonoma County Bordeaux varietals to make this wine slightly bolder, while maintaining a juicy acidity, all of which combine to make it a versatile food wine. We would enjoy this with anything from hearty pasta dishes with red, meat-based sauce, to pizzas, poultry, pork, game, and beef, as well as berry or chocolate based desserts.

This wine is an homage to our Old World Italian roots with a look forward to our family and future here in Northern California, and once again, as always, una festa nella tua boca! Salute!
