Final Assessment

We can’t get enough of today’s prestigious Carrara Vino Nobile di Montepulciano, which is one of the leading Italian wines that have put Tuscany, central Italy, on the world map. Its name derives from the picturesque hill town of Montepulciano, south-east of Siena.

This tiny appellation is centuries old and dates back to the Etruscans and earlier. In it’s prime during the 15th century, it was a favorite among the local Sienese aristocracy, and in the 16th century it was revered by Pope Paul III, who spoke of the wine’s excellent qualities. The terroir in the area around the village of Montepulciano is very unique and well suited to the Sangiovese Grosso grape, producing wines of depth, structure and complexity.

Beautifully balanced and rich, this bright Italian wine expresses notes of soft plum and fresh violets. A true delight to the senses, we strongly recommend you order today and receive this traditional Italian wine in time for the upcoming holidays!

What the Winery Says

History

The origin of Vino Nobile goes back to the 17th century, when it was defined «The King of Tuscan Wines» (Francesco Redi, Bacco in Toscana). Doubtlessly drunk and appreciated by aristocrats and gentlemen (hence its name) this wine has transcended its fame to modern times. In the last 15 years (it was given the D.O.C.G. in 1980), Castellani took part to the renewal of the excellence of this wine, thanks to increased financial energies and up-dated philosophy. The improved vineyard management and modernization in the cellars have elevated the quality level of our Vino Nobile. Today it is considered one of the most prestigious red Italian wines.

Vinification and refinement

This Vino Nobile is produced and refined in the heart of the production area, between Val D’Orcia and Valdichiana, from vineyards situated in a countryside rich in monuments, villas and country homes. After a minimum ageing period of 24 months in traditional Tuscan casks, it is refined in bottle for some months. Thanks to its character, it is also a wine with ageing potential.

About the Winery

“Since 1903 my family has been exporting its own finest Estate wines from Tuscany. We have changed and evolved over the decades, but throughout the years the constant philosophy of our work has remained the same “The quality of the wine begins in the vineyard”, as my ancestors used to say. As we enter this century our aim and aspiration is today what has always been: to create memorable wines. This is the reason why our work during the last ten years has been so passionate, investing in research and new cellar technologies.”

Piergiorgio Castellani Jr - The latest generation. Piergiorgio, after graduating from Pisa University, got involved in the company and is now responsible of the Agricultural and Winemaking Department.

During the past 25 years we have been untiringly working in our Estates for vineyard selection, to ensure the best soil types, microclimates and light exposure to the sun of the grapes. Sophisticated enological techniques and an intensive research on different clones, have allowed us to valorise the great Tuscan vines, as the Sangiovese, and to introduce new local clones that will contribute to the launch of innovative wines and to the promotion of the image of wine-producing Tuscany.

Pier Giorgio Castellani Sr - Expert wine-connoisseur and initiator of Castellani expansion phase, continues to provide the financial and production policy guidelines.
