Final Assessment

Mitch Cosentino is our best-selling winemaker for good reason; his wines always captivate our hearts - and those of our loyal Operatives.

Today’s highly recommended Mitch Cosentino-made wine is his 2007 pureCru Sangio Vetta Sangiovese. This is an expressive, spicy, approachable wine that delivers bold flavors with the sort of bright acidity that makes it an excellent companion for your Fall dining.

Built to pair with with your favorite meals, this wine is flexible enough to be served with anything from a meat lasagna to a spicy pasta dish. Drinking beautifully now, you can either enjoy this wine when you get it home, or cellar this delicious delight for a couple more years. Personally, we’ll be drinking ours over the Fall and Winter Holiday’s.

Tasting Profile

Look

Translucent brickish edges transition to lovely garnet hues through the slightly darker heart of the wine. After spinning the wine, tall, skinny, wine-stained tear move slowly down the glass.

Smell

Perfumed and lush, with spice, earth and dark red fruit in abundance. With top notes wild strawberry, cherry liquor, candied plum and black cherry. As the wine opens, it reveals follow-on aromas of cedar, dried violets, dried orange peel and bramble.

Feel

Bright and light-weight at the front of the tongue. Then, the wine coats the mid-palate, focusing flavors and a plush dryness that gradually spreads outward to the edges of the palate.

Taste

Concentrated and full of flavor, lead by black cherry, tart red plum, boysenberry, wild strawberry, leather, black pepper and dried violets. The more you spin the wine, the more it softens, revealing follow-on notes of cedar, dried fall leaves, dried green tobacco leaf and cassis.

Finish

Slightly dry, with long sustaining red and black fruits that fade to spice, leather and tobacco. As flavors fade, a soft, mineral-rich dryness spreads slowly around the entire palate.

What the Winery Says

“Brunello meets Super Tuscan”

Appellation:

California (Napa, Lodi and Lake County)

Composition:

91% Sangiovese, 7% Cabernet Franc, 2% Cabernet Sauvignon

Winemaking:

Each lot was fermented on their own and aged 30 months in oak prior to blending a couple of months before bottling.

Tasting notes:

Spicy red fruit and baking spices in the nose. On the palate the spices persist alongside ripe red fruits with notes of Rhubarb and cranberry that is balanced with good acidity. yet the wine is ripe and rich throughout.

Comments:

Having made Sangioveses since 1992, this is the first under the pureCru label, a small production lot that we have given the proprietary name of Sangio Vetta meaning Sangiovese at the peak or its pinnacle. In future, as with this, it will be blended in the best way that reflects the style we believe shows it best without having to worry about the percentages of the varietals being a minimum for labeling regulations

About the Winery

Meet our Cru!

Three wine lovers from the central valley join an award-winning Napa Valley winemaker to found pureCru, a winery producing small quantities of unique blends.

“I had been reminiscing about a small, hands-on entity where I could do it all myself again, like I did in the beginning.” Mitch Cosentino

Celebrating 30 years of winemaking and with more than a thousand awards to his name, Mitch Cosentino is making another dream come true with his launch of pureCru Napa Valley. Mitch Cosentino is making another dream come true with his launch of pureCru Napa Valley.

Mitch Cosentino

Cosentino began making wine in small lots in Modesto, California in 1980. Ten years later he moved the Cosentino Winery operation to the Napa Valley, where he continued to make many award-winning varietal and blended wines.

Cosentino has a gift for identifying fruit sources and is highly skilled and artistic in determining blends. He’s a big believer in the hands-on, old world use of punched cap fermentation, a labor-intensive, hand-crafted method of winemaking. When it comes to the small lots Cosentino puts into his pureCru blends, this “micro” approach to winemaking allows him to better control the delicate process from the vineyard to the bottle

DON HELD

“Being born and raised in the Napa Valley I have always had a love for the area and desire to return. Partnering with Mitch and the formation of pureCru is allowing that dream to come true.” Don Held

Don is a principal in The Produce Exchange, an integrated fresh produce company, involved in production, sales and distribution of fresh vegetables across North America. He has been involved in agriculture for the past 35 years ranging from being a CPA specializing in management services for agricultural accounts to growing and management of row crops, tree fruits and wine grapes

JIM NYLEN

“I was always a drinker of big, bold cabs. Mitch introduced me to blends, and I realized what I’d been missing.” Jim Nylen

James (J.P.) Nylen is the founder and president of Nylen Properties Corp., a commercial real estate construction and development firm located in the Central Valley of California, founded in 1977. A passion for great wine and golf led to a meeting with Mitch Cosentino. It didn’t take him long to recognize Mitch’s talent and pureCru Napa Valley was on its way.
